Durable Reno Mattresses for Erosion Control and Stability
Reno Mattress
Reno mattresses are wire mesh structures filled with stone, and applied in erosion control, slope stabilization, and channel linings. These may be fabricated out of double twisted hexagonal mesh (woven) or welded wire mesh. The flexibility of double-twisted mesh enables the ground to adapt whereas welded mesh is a rigid structure with a flat profile. Both are corrosion free and allow growth of vegetation to provide long term protection against erosion.

Parts of Reno Mattress
- Base Panel: this is the bottom row and supports the weight of the stone fill to make it stable.
- Side & End Panels: Offer structural walls that hold the stone and prohibit sideways travel.
- Diaphragms: Internal walls that preserve the structure and make the rocks incapable of shifting.
- Selvedge Wire: It is a stronger edge wire used to add strength and eliminate unraveling.
- Lacing Wire / Fasteners: Panel attachment wire, to bind and make panels rigid and structurally integrated.
- Bracing Ties: Hold off bulging and deformation of the mattress walls under pressure.
Nomenclature
- Mesh Sizes: 6x8 (=64x83 mm) and 8x10 (=83x114 mm), usually applied in erosion control.
- Mesh Size: Welded mesh is available in 50 50 mm, 75 75 mm, 100 50 mm to give a stiff structure to act as a support.
- Standard dimensions: This could be stated as Length x Width x Height (ex: 4m x 2m x 0.23m) to organize a standard construction.

Specifications
ASTM A975 (Double-Twisted Mesh Mattresses)
This standard specifies the qualities of double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh applied in gabion mattresses. It defines wire sizes, mesh sizes, and coating options to enable long life usage. The structure must maintain flexibility and withstand environmental stresses such as water flow and soil pressure.
Mesh Size | Wire Ø (mm) | Selvedge Wire Ø (mm) | Lacing Wire Ø (mm) | Coating Options |
---|---|---|---|---|
6×8 mm | 2.2 (galv/PVC) | 2.7 (galv/PVC) | 2.2 | Galv, Zn-5%Al, PVC |
8×10 mm | 2.7 (galv/PVC) | 3.4 (galv/PVC) | 2.2 | Galv, Zn-5%Al, PVC |
ASTM A974 (Welded Mesh Mattresses)
Welded mesh gabions are covered by ASTM A974, which imposes structural integrity and dimensional control. The standard ensures high weld shear strength and corrosion-resistant coatings for long-term performance. ASTM A974 is widely applied in projects where a rigid structure is needed with minimal deformation tolerance.
Mesh Size | Wire Ø (mm) | Weld Shear Strength | Coating Options |
---|---|---|---|
76 x 76 | 3.05 (galv/PVC) | ≥70% of tensile strength | Galv, Zn-5%Al, PVC |
38 x 76 | 2.2 (galv/PVC) | ≥70% of tensile strength | Galv, Zn-5%Al, PVC |
BS EN 10223-3 (Double-Twisted Mattresses)
This is the European standard relating to double-twisted wire mesh gabions applied in civil works. It guarantees the durability of mesh wires, selvedge wires, and protective coatings. The standard ensures structural integrity for reliable performance in erosion control and slope protection applications.
Mesh Size | Wire Ø (mm) | Selvedge Wire Ø (mm) | Lacing Wire Ø (mm) | Coating Options |
---|---|---|---|---|
60×80 mm | 2.0 | 2.4 | 2.2 | Zinc, Zn-5%Al, PVC |
80×100 mm | 2.7 | 3.4 | 2.2 | Zinc, Zn-5%Al, PVC |
BS EN 10223-8 (Welded Mattresses)
BS EN 10223-8 provides the requirements for welded mesh gabions, emphasizing wire tensile strength, coating quality, and weld durability. It ensures that welded mattresses possess sufficient load-bearing capacity and resistance to corrosion. This standard is widely applied in infrastructure and hydraulic engineering works.
Mesh Size | Wire Ø (mm) | Weld Strength | Coating Options |
---|---|---|---|
50×50 mm | 3.0 | ≥75% of tensile strength | Zinc, Zn-5%Al, PVC, Stainless Steel |
75×75 mm | 2.7 | ≥75% of tensile strength | Zinc, Zn-5%Al, PVC, Stainless Steel |
