Gabion mattresses, or Reno mattresses, are flexible wire mesh units that use stones filled and are used for erosion control, slope stabilization, and channel linings. They are provided in forms made of double-twisted hexagonal mesh (woven), as well as those made of welded wire mesh. Welded mesh is characterized by a strong rigidity and flatness, compared with flexibility, and ground-adjustability, of double-twisted mesh. Both are also corrosion resistant and promote the growth of vegetation making them suitable for long term erosion protection. Base Panel: Provides stability at its center by distributing the weight of  the stone and supporting overall stability.

Side & End Panels: Provide walls for balance of the stone fill and prevent horizontal displacement.

Diaphragms: Rocks stabilizing internal braces extremely important for stability and preventing rocks from moving

Selvedge Wire: A reinforced outer edge wire, not only stabilises, but also prevents material from unwinding.

Lacing Wire / Fasteners: Join panels closely together for a good stable structure. 

Nomenclature

Double-Twisted Mesh Sizes: Popular sizes include 6×8 (approx. 64×83 mm) and 8×10 (approx. 83×114 mm) that are widely used for the purpose of erosion control efforts.

Welded Mesh Sizes: In three available sizes 50mm by 50mm, 75mm by 75mm and 100mm by 50mm, these sizes improve on structural stability.

Standard Dimensions: The dimensions are in standardized form Length × Width × Height, that is, 4m × 2m × 0.23m, and this simplifies construction.

This specification describes the specifications for double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh applied in gabion mattresses. ASTM A974 (Welded Mesh Mattresses)

As stipulated by ASTM A974, structural stability and uniform size are ensured in welded mesh gabions. A more focused attention is given to weld shear performance and the use of corrosion-resistant finishes for long term performance. This standard is commonly applied for the soil shaping materials, namely, the gabions generation, in critical conditions, because of its strong focus on rigidity and deformation control.

BS EN 10223-3 (Double-Twisted Mattresses)

This European standard gives requirements for the double-twisted wire mesh gabions used in civil engineering works. It establishes that the strength of mesh wires, selvedge wires and coatings aligns with the durability standards. By imposing structural integrity criteria, the standard enables the stability of gabions in erosion control and slope protection settings.

BS EN 10223-8 (Welded Mattresses)

Applicable to this standard, BS EN 10223-8 indicates the criteria used in producing welded mesh gabions with attention paid to the wire tensile strength, coating conditions and weld stability. It specifies requirements that the welded mattresses should maintain adequate load-bearing capabilities and be corrosion resistant. This standard is relied on by large numbers of infrastructure and hydraulic engineering projects.
